One Nation, One Subscription scheme will start from this day, crores of students will get benefit.


A big news has come out for about 1.8 crore students of universities, IITs and state-funded higher education institutions across the country. Under the Central Government’s ‘One Nation, One Subscription’ (ONOS) scheme, from January 1, 2024, these students will get free access to more than 13,400 top international magazines from around the world. Its objective is to provide equal access to high quality research papers to all students, researchers and teachers of the country.

Under the first phase of this initiative, 13,400 international journals related to major fields like science, technology, engineering, mathematics, medicine, humanities, management and social sciences will be available to the students. Many of these journals are published by major publishers such as Elsevier, Springer Nature and Wiley.

How will it be beneficial?

Through this scheme, 451 state universities, 4,864 colleges and 172 institutions of national importance will be among the 6,380 higher education and research institutions that will get access to these journals. Till now only a few selected institutions had subscription to such magazines. But now every institution will get these facilities equally through ONOS.

Next Steps for the Initiative

The second phase of this initiative will expand to private educational institutions, which will be done under the public-private partnership model. In the third phase, universal access to these magazines will be provided through important points in public libraries.

According to experts, this initiative has been started for a period of three years at a cost of Rs 6,000 crore. This will not only benefit the institutions located in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, but will also boost international competitiveness in the country in research, science and other disciplines.
